ON  A RAINNY DAY

A good opportunity to get to know the metro. It is safe, clean and fast. If you are in Copacabana or Ipanema  you are in the south part of Rio (Zona Sul), so you will be heading north direction (Zona Norte). The station are General Osorio in Ipanema and Canta Galo, Siqueira Campos and Arco Verde in Copacabana. Get direction north. Your destination will be Cinelandia Station at down town area.

When getting out you will be able to see a part of the city that was the most famous in the beginning of the 20th century. The Opera House, House of City Councilors,  the National Library Building and the Brazilian History Museum are some edifications surrounding Cinelandia.  Keep going on the street to the left side of the Opera House till you arrive on Nilo Pecanha  street. Actually you will be looking for Goncalves Dias street to make a stop and grab a coffee at The Confeitaria Colombo, an old restaurant built at late of 19th century.

Your next spot will be going straight ahead to Buenos Aires Street, turn left and walk to Passos Avenue. There are two streets parallel to Buenos Aires:  Senhor dos Passos and Alfandega. These together form the Saara Street Market. You will be able to find cheap havaianas flip flops and other souvenirs.

To return, walk opposite direction at Alfandega street with intersection of Uruguaiana street.

Look for Metro Uruguaiana station.

Head South (Zona Sul) direction, to the station near by your apartment. Wait for the metro with a red sign above the wagon doors. (S. Pena – Gen.Osorio).

When buying the tickets ask for doubles. (duplo) one double – um duplo.

Street in Portuguese is Rua.

AT THE BEACH

Ipanema is more expensive than Copacabana beach. As I go Copa, chairs costs R$3,00 and umbrellas R$5,00. I heavily recommend the POINT OF TANIA TEND, between Miguel Lemos street and Djalma Urich. Tania is a very good friend and besides making your Caipirinha drink will be looking after you.  Do not forget to mention Roger Rio.

SAFETY

Now a days as I already mentioned, Rio much safer. Just avoid golden jewelry specially the around the neck. Besides it nothing will happened.

TAXIS

If I am busy you can grab a cab, it is not like they will all rip you off. Just make sure the clock is counting. It starts something around R$4,60.
